In Kenya, the Akamba are considered the best wood carvers. Here one witnesses the cradle of this art and the efforts being made to replace the Muvingo (ebony teak) they use. This is an ideal place for wholesale buying of souvenirs.

Besides wood carvings, one can get a glimpse of the forests, rocks and hills that are ideal for viewing and photography. The area has the Yatta plateau, which is reportedly the longest lava flow in the world. It also has caves, e.g. Syokimau. The rocks and hills in the area offer potential rock climbing opportunities.
History
The Wamunyu wood carving community was started by the late Mutisya Munge in the year 1918. The wood carving was done from a local hard wood tree species called Muvingo (Ebony) in the early days.
