Field Marshal Dedan
Kimathi Waciuri (Kimathi wa Waciuri), October 31,
1920 – February 18, 1957, was a Kenyan freedom fighter
who fought against British colonisation in Kenya in the 1950s.
He was later caught, convicted and executed by the British
colonial government.

Botanical Gardens
Economic pressure

Independence
Monument
Built in 1988 to commemorate 25 years
of independence, this monument is a marble rendering of the
lowering of the British colonial flag and the raising of the
Kenyan flag. It cost nearly a million dollars to construct

Ivory
Burning Site
In 1989 the former president
of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi lit a dramatic ivory bonfire, to
torch 10 tons of ivory worth Kshs. 60 million, in a bid to
eliminate the mass slaughter of Africa's elephants for their
tusks. A commemorative plaque with the legendary words "Great
objectives often require great sacrifices" is placed
at this location. Since then, the great fire has been lit
twice more to banish confiscated stocks of poached rhino horn
