Built in 1973 as a commemorative monument to independence. An ihara tree marks the spot where the national flag was first hoisted on 12 December 1963. Surrounding the tree is a map of Kenya showing its different provinces.
Getting There
Uhuru Gardens is located on the Langata highway next to the new Uchumi hyper and bordering the famous Carnivore restaurant.
Main Attractions
The gardens offer a fantastic picnic site for corporates, individuals, couples and families. Of late, it has began to re-position itself as a possible wedding ground. Being near the Nairobi National Park, you may catch a glimpse of small wildlife if you venture towards the edge of the gardens and of course if you are patient enough! The gardens neighbour the famous Carnivore Restaurant. You can also shop at the nearby Uchumi for your picnic snacks which frees you of heavy buggage as you leave your home.
History
On Independence Day in 1963, Kisio Munyao made history by planting the Kenyan flag atop Mt. Kenya. The spirits and hopes for a better Kenya were high. The promise of independence was captured by the euphoria of the day.
