The Kenya Museum Society invites you for a relaxing Saturday afternoon, watching Butterfly People, a short, spectacular and insightful documentary, about the Samburu of northern Kenya.

Synopsis

The Samburu people of northern Kenya have, for centuries, followed a pastoral life. Their culture evolved into an age-grade system, wherein rites of passage were marked by complex rituals and ceremonies. Within the system, the turning point for every Samburu is circumcision, its purpose being to create a new generation of warriors, traditional protectors of the tribe. Circumcisions take place rarely, their timing determined by the stars.

Set against a background of varied and magnificent scenery, the film, made by Rhodia Mann, who was adopted into a Samburu family, begins with Rhodia’s personal involvement with the family. Through the life story of her Samburu ‘mother’, she blends historical fact with folklore and mythology to give a history of the people, as far as it is known. The story takes us from the past into the present, and ultimately to the fascinating circumcision ceremonies of 2005.

Rhodia is also a bead specialist and author. Her books will be on sale at the event.

The exhibition series Sasa Nairobi is the basis of our work in the field of contemporary art.

Since 2008, we have exhibited around 30 artists, the last being a solo show by Mimi Cherono Ng’ok. We continue our series with the Kenyan painter Michael Soi.

Being the son of one of Kenya’s well-known painters, Soi is a member of what can be termed as the second generation of Kenyan artists that emerged in the late 90’s.

His paintings are inspired by the city of Nairobi and revolve around its political, economic and social aspects. With satire and a humorous gaze he thus comments on political impunity, greed and Kenya’s growing sex industry.

The exhibition is an ongoing portrait series, depicting Kenyan women. Soi is referring to the show as “a celebration of the mother, the sister, the aunt and the daughter. The work on display is from a series of 42 paintings, all portraying Kenyan women from all over Nairobi who can occasionally be seen walking down the street, in the bar or in the church.”
