The FIFA World Cup Trophy heralded as the world’s most coveted trophy will soon be making a very rare visit to Kenya when it arrives in the country on the 27th of November, 2013 courtesy of beverage giant, Coca-Cola.

Kenya will be among 88 countries that will host the World Cup Trophy as it makes a 267-day journey across the world on-board a 40-seater McDonnell Douglas (MD) 83 aircraft whose production came to an end in 2000 after the 1997 merger of Boeing and McDonnell.

This is the second time the trophy is coming to Kenya. The trophy first visited the country in 2009 on its way to South Africa, the host of the 2010 World Cup.

Before going back to Brazil in December 6 2013, where the 2014 FIFA World cup will be staged, the trophy will have travelled through Africa, Europe, South and North America. FIFA plans to use this time to launch the official anthem for the 2014 World cup scheduled for June next year.

Besides Kenya, the trophy will pass through Algeria, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, South Africa, Tanzania, and Tunisia. Coca Cola will be using an innovative timed ticketing system that will be the first of its kind to ever be tried in Kenya.

Timed ticketing allows the issuance of timed tickets to the viewing event which helps manage crowds and prevents congestion while maximizing on as many people as possible to view the legendary trophy. Planning for this event has taken 5 months.

Viewing of the trophy in Kenya will take place at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre on November 28 from 9am. According to Coca-Cola, the trophy’s tour of the country will be part of the company’s celebrations of ‘Kenya @50’ as Kenya celebrates 50 years of independence in December.
