It is barely 3 years since Kenya was voted the ‘Undiscovered Golf Destination of the Year’ by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators. Since then, there has been a sudden interest in Kenya as a golfing destination yet the game’s history goes way back than this. In fact, golfing clubs like the Royal Nairobi Club have been around for more than 100 years. The Kenyan golfing culture has been around much longer before the recent accolades began to stream in. It is just that very little was done to market world-class facilities in the country until recently.

Kenya currently boasts 40 golf courses, 10 of which are classified as international and 8 that are export-ready (ideal for international golf travellers). Yet little is known of these facilities which have a potential to open up a new culture of tourism never before known in the country. But golfing in Kenya is not only about the beautifully manicured grounds. There is more to a game of golf in Kenya that makes the experience a one of a kind. Allow us to take you through a few here; Continue reading

It is now official that Kenya will soon be getting 3 brand new cities in the coastal towns of Diani and Kilifi and Isiolo in the north by 2015 courtesy of a new ambitious initiative seeking to boost tourism in the country through the creation of tourism resort cities. It looks like we might be borrowing heavily from a similar model in Morocco who already had a tourism ministry as early as 1985.

Morocco which receives more than 8 million tourists annually began a major project commissioned by King Mohammed VI and dubbed ‘Plan Azur’. Continue reading

Mount Kilimanjaro has been engulfed in controversy over who owns the bragging rights to Africa's tallest mountain

Mount Kilimanjaro has been engulfed in controversy over who owns the bragging rights to Africa's tallest mountain

Recently I was trying to reach to the bottom of the age-old Mount Kilimanjaro saga regarding whether the snow-capped mountain belongs to Kenya or Tanzania and I quickly discovered, like everyone else before me, I was never going to get to the bottom of this mystery – so I decided to go with a rather interesting philosophy I picked that if you want to get fantastic views of the mountain, you would need to be in Kenya but if you are more keen on a climb, then you are better-off doing it from the Tanzanian side. That will be my final word on the matter! Continue reading

They say that nearly 40% (about 2.5 billion) people in the world are at risk of contracting Malaria. More than 3 million die every year courtesy of Malaria. Today, Malaria is almost catching up with AIDS in terms of its toll on society. But the scary part is that 90% of the world’s Malaria is found in Africa.

In Kenya Malaria is present in all areas below 2,500m although recent discoveries show evidence of infection in areas previously thought to be at elevations well-above Malaria infection such as the Kenyan highlands.

The predominant species is Plasmodium falciparum and is the most dangerous of the 4 known species that attack humans (Plasmodium Falciparum, Plasmodium Vivax, Plasmodium Ovale, and Plasmodium Malariae). Continue reading

The lakeside city of Kisumu looks set to take the mantle of ‘gateway to East Africa’. With the mushrooming of some amazing mid-sized accommodation facilities in the last couple of years, Kisumu now ushers in the international community with the opening of the 4th international airport in Kenya after Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Mombasa’s Moi International Airport and the Eldoret International Airport in the Rift Valley town of Eldoret. The discovery, at the old harbour of Mombasa, of a 17th century Portuguese shipwreck by divers Conway Plough and Peter Philips in 1960, set in motion, what was to be, perhaps, one of the largest excavation missions in Kenya’s maritime history.

The shipwreck of Santo Antonio de Tanná which was excavated between 1976 and 1981 by a joint team of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology and the National Museums of Kenya consisted of about 40m of the hull still intact.

The Santo Antonio de Tanná was a 42-gun frigate built in 1678. Construction work began in Bassein and completed 2 years later in Goa, about 630km south of Bassein. Continue reading
