Welcome
to issue 19 of ELNEWS.
We want to take this opportunity to thank all our readers - especially those who recommended ELNEWS to others not in our mailing list. Without you, we could not have reached the 32,430 readers who read our previous issue (Issue 18) and we trust this enthusiasm will continue to grow by leaps and bounds. Thank you.
Our showcase this month is the Nairobi National Museum that has just been opened to the public after two years of intensive renovation works. It is bolder, more exciting and definitely promises to be a real crowd puller. Meanwhile, as always, we continously innovate so that we can give you a memorable experience. Our Photo Gallery for instance, is growing and so are our safari attractions. We are currently reorganising our video podcasts so you can easily find them. Keep visiting our website for progress on this.
Finally. Do you have a story to share on ELNEWS with our other readers? Submit it to our editors for review. Happy reading. |

| Virgin Atlantic Set to Invest in MAASAI MARA |
|
Sir Richard Branson, founder and CEO of Virgin Atlantic hinted that he may soon be setting up a new lodge outside the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. He plans to lease land from sorrounding communities to put up a high-end lodge. Unconfirmed estimates value the investment at over a million sterling pounds.
Branson's thoughts behind this idea is that a buy out would cut off the community from future benefits while a lease would guarrantee continued earnings from their land. Branson revealed his investment plan during a recent visit to Sekenani Primary School in Maasai Mara where he opened the school's new boys' and girls' dormitories and a new kitchen area.
The school project was made possible through a collaboration between Sarova Hotels, Water for All and 10 frequent flyer volunteers from Virgin Atlantic's Flying Club. Meanwhile, Virgin has pledged continued sponsorship of the Kenya Rugby Football Union for a second season (08/09 season) which will kick off in Dubai in November, 2008 to climax in Scotland in June, 2009.

| Four Air Travel TIPS For You |
|
| 1. Be Prepared
Get a good night’s sleep before you travel, eat a light meal and take some light exercise before arriving at the terminal.
2. Dress Down
Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes that are not too restrictive.
3. Hydrate
On longer journeys low cabin humidity can cause dry eyes, nose and throat. Drink plenty of water and fruit juice (keep alcohol, tea and coffee to a minimum as these can lead to dehydration). If possible, remove contact lenses and apply skin moisturiser and lip balm.
4. Stay Focussed
If you are prone to motion sickness during take-off, landing or in the event of turbulence, focus on a fixed object. Some people believe that applying pressure to your earlobes can reduce nausea.

| The Nairobi NATIONAL MUSEUM: A New Experience |
|
The Nairobi National Musem recently underwent a major facelift that has transformed it into a world class facility and a destination of choice for both local and international visitors. The museum features a host of rare artifacts, some dating back 18 million years ago and is proving to be an exciting attraction to all.
The newly branded museum now houses three major exhibitions. The parmanent exhibitions include; The Hall of Kenya which highlights Kenya's national heritage depicted by the three pillars of nature, culture and history; The Great Hall of Mammals takes the visitor through the evolutionary divergence and convergence of mammals over time; The Cradle of Human Kind discloses the evolutionary change in hominids laying particular focus on Kenya and East africa being the cradle of mankind; and the Cycle of Life which samples the life of most Kenyan communities through major milestones and phases.
The museum is a must see. Enchanted Landscapes ® was there and as usual, brings you a fascinating picture gallery depicting the spectacular work of art that is now the Nairobi National Museum. See the picture gallery Here. Nairobi Museum |

| Kenya Airways Receives E-TICKETING COMPLIANCE Award |
|
| The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has recognised the role played by Kenya Airways in promoting the uptake of e-ticketing by airlines within the region.
IATA, the world's airline industry regulator gave the national carrier a Last Paper Award plaque engraved "100 per cent ET is now a reality. Thank you for helping us make history."
The airline's IT director Kevin Kinyanjui said Kenya Airways is 10% points short of fully issuing e-tickets only. "Hopefully by end of this financial year, KQ will have achieved 100% e-compliance," said Mr Kinyanjui.
The industry was considered 100% ET at midnight on May 31, 2008, when travel agents stopped issuing IATA neutral paper tickets.
The four year ET project has been the flagship of simplifying the business programme initiated in June 2004.
The programme has eliminated about 300 million paper tickets from the industry, saving approximately US$3 billion annually to member airlines.
Mr Kinyanjui said the carrier is slightly over 90% ET-compliant with the remaining balance being paper tickets issued in non-BSP markets.
Kenya Airways embraced e-ticketing and issued the first such ticket in January 2005. Currently, the airline has 43 e-eligible destinations, 66 e-interline partners, 30 e-infant partners and e-interline agreements with 8 Global Distribution Systems.

| Rhino Dehorning: Are We Anywhere Near a SOLUTION? |
|
The rhino's unique horns may well be the defining feature of this great animal. Unfortunately, it is also the feature that makes it the target of ruthless poachers seeking to sell horns at great profit on the black market.
In the late 80s and early 90s, rhinos in Zimbabwe were dehorned in the hope that it would make them worthless to poachers. Even today, some conservationists still believe that dehorning is a viable solution to protect this species. But many wildlife conservationists now believe that dehorning strategies are, in the end, unsuccessful. African rhinos are snared rather than shot, and the rhino is caught regardless of whether it has a horn or not.
Additionally, the rhino's horns grow continously, much like human hair and fingernails do. Thus dehorning operations need to be repeated every two to three years and the costs are enormous. Furthermore, rhino horns that are sold for use in Asian medicine are ultimately ground up, meaning that a partial horn is as good a catch for the poacher as the whole horn.
As the debate about dehorning rages on, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) continues to seek alternative measures to protect the rhinos while leaving their precious horns intact.

| Sacred Mijikenda Kayas on UNESCO's WORLD HERITAGE Sites List |
|
|
The Sacred Mijikenda Kayas are now on the UNECSO World Heritage List They were placed on the list by the World Heritage Committee at their 32nd annual session held in Quebec, Canada between 2nd and 10th July 2008. The sites inscribed are:
- Kaya Giriama (Fungo)
- The Rabai Kayas (Mudzimuvya, Bomu and Fimboni)
- Kaya Kambe
- Kaya Jibana
- Kaya Ribe
- Kaya Kauma
- The Duruma Kayas (Gandini and Mtswakara)
Located on the Coastal plains they are a living legacy of the people’s history, culture and religion. Because of the forests’ protected status, they are repositories of biodiversity, and a home to rare species of plants and animals.
The Kayas now become the fourth Kenyan site to grace the World Heritage Site List. Others are Lamu town for its unique culture, Mt. Kenya for its undisturbed natural look and Sibiloi National Park in the Rift Valley for both cultural and natural significance.
The listed Kayas were carefully selected from 11 Kenya had presented to the world heritage committee advisory board last year.
The Sacred Mijikenda Kayas are an outstanding and unique example of how the collective attitudes and beliefs of a rural society have shaped or sculpted a landscape over time in response to prevailing needs.
