AMAICA
Traditional Foods Festival Kicks
off.
|
The
Amaica Restaurant, in collaboration with the ministry
of national heritage and culture, Kenya Broadcasting
Corporation and Royco, hosted a unique event dubbed,
'Celebration of Kenya's Authentic Cuisine', where
a host of delicious traditional foods from different
parts of Kenya were showcased.
The 2 day event event culminated in a colourful galla
night. Amaica's founder, Pamela Muyeshi (pictured),
is the inspiration behind the idea and says her strategy
is to ensure Kenyans embrace healthy eating by going
back to our roots and traditions. To capture a glimpse
of what went on see our Amaica
Photo Gallery.

Coastal
Flavours from MWEMBE TANGANYIKA
|
At
the recently concluded Amaica traditional foods festival,
several exhibitors from all over the country were
in attendance to show off their culinary prowess in
preparing indigenous Kenyan delicacies. A group of
women retirees from Mwembe Tayari at the Kenya Coast
were also there to highlight famous coastal dishes.
The group was formed over a year ago to help raise
funds to set up a local drug rehabilitation centre
after the women, who are mothers to drug addicts,
could no longer afford the expensive cost of private
rehabilitation centres (about Kshs. 33,000 per patient).
The women cook a variety of foods and sell this to
raise funds towards this course. At the festival,
they came to do just that and they mesmerised the
crowds with their unique dishes. Nadia Salim (pictured),
the group's secretary, says that their priority now
is to finalise payment of a piece of land they have
identified to put up the centre. They have already
made a commitment through a down payment. |

Measuring
1.7 metres and weighing 77 kgs the catch seemed
just like another good day's work. But the fishermen
did not realise the significance of this otherwise
rare catch. They had netted coelacanth,
until recently believed to have been extinct
for more than 65 million years. This
rarest of gems was accidentally caught off the
Malindi coast in 2002. The catch was the first
ever recording of this fish species in East
African waters. Only a few museums around the
world boast of having one... |
